THE HANDS ON THE WHEEL

Meet James..

I've had an interest in pottery since I was young, but never had the chance to pursue it. A few years ago I was helping a neighbor move and he happened to have a pottery wheel for sale. I purchased it, took it home, and didn't have the foggiest notion what to do with it. One day while I was digging holes while installing fence posts, I found some really nice clay. I took the clay to a local art gallery and started asking the owner a lot of questions. He was amused, and I quickly found out that there are pottery supply stores where clay is purchased, and potters don't typically dig holes to get their clay. Dan Wheeler became a mentor and a close friend and I would not be where I am today, if it wasn't for his patience and help. I started making pottery on winter evenings when I was done working on the farm, and it quickly grew from there.

I've been very blessed to do something I enjoy. I enjoy the feel of clay in my hands, I like mixing my own glazes and creating different recipes and I enjoy seeing the finished product. My wife says I have "an idea a minute," so pottery is the perfect outlet for me.

I enjoy opening the kiln after it's fired. It's as much fun as a kid opening presents on Christmas morning, and I get to do this several times a month instead of just once a year.

There is joy in creating something beautiful, and I thank God for the abilities he has given me.
